Rafa Garcia Stays Undefeated: Combate Americas Mexicali Results & Review

Combate Americas had themselves a banger of a card when they presented “Combate Mexicali” this past Friday night on AXS TV. The main event pitted undefeated Combate Americas lightweight champion and Mexicali native Rafa Garcia against Peru’s Humberto Bandenay. The crowd was great the whole night but they really came alive during Garcia’s entrance as he came to the cage with his own personal singer serenading him.

Rafa Garcia really came off like a star. He is clearly a guy that Campbell McClaren wants to build around. Garcia was the aggressor the entire fight, landed cleaner shots and secured multiple takedowns to win a unanimous decision.

Overall this was an exciting show up and down the card. Combate focuses on lighter weight hispanic fighters and surprise surprise, they really bring it. What the show lacks in star power it more than makes up for it in action. Very little stalling and all fights are 3 rounds regardless if there’s a title on the line. If I had one gripe, it would be that title fights should be 5 rounds, which was being openly discussed by Julianna Pena of the AXS broadcast team.

The co-main event featured an exciting Flyweight bout between Edgar Chairez and a man with the most spectacular mullet David Macias. Unfortunately Macias’ mullet did not protect him from Chairez rear naked choke, as he lost by submission.

Speaking of the broadcast team, Max Bretos and Julianna Pena should be commended for the job they did. They broadcasted the show remotely from AXS’s studios and did not miss a beat. Typically the announce crew is better when they are at the arena but the production team did a great job in the studio, which was lacking during the RIZIN show later in the evening on FITE.
