The seemingly never ending saga of UFC 249 has taken another twist, as Khabib announced last night on his Instagram, that he is under Lockdown in Russia and will not be able to compete.
Furthermore, in his post he stated that the UFC is looking for a replacement to fight Ferguson for the the April 19th bout at a still yet to be determined location.
According to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, UFC is looking to book Justin Gaethje as the replacement.
This would mark the 5th time a Khabib-Ferguson fight has fallen through.
Khabib claims that he left the states to go to Russia a month ahead of the fight because he was told that it would 100% not happen in the states. According to Khabib, the fight was supposed to happen in Abu Dhabi, which would contradict reports of it expecting to take place somewhere in the state of Florida.
“We were training at (American Kickboxing Academy) without any information regarding the fight – where and how is it going to happen,” he said (via RT Sport translation). “Then the UFC told us that the fight 100 percent isn’t happening in the States. And they said that 99 percent that it will happen in (the United Arab) Emirates – Abu Dhabi.”
