NJPW Unifies the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Titles

Tokyo Sports announced that New Japan Pro Wrestling has unified the IWGP Intercontinental and Heavyweight titles and that Kota Ibushi will be the first champion. Nothing is official but I believe he will be referred to as the “IWGP World Heavyweight Champion”. This will end the long history of one of the most prestigious titles in the history of wrestling.

The International Wrestling Grand Prix was originally a tournament in 1983, which was won bu Hulk Hogan. The title was defended annually. The IWGP Championship was created in 1987 and was first held by Antonio Inoki. Since ten it has been regarded as one of the top two or three most coveted titles in the world.

Unifying the titles will turn Ibushi in to one of the all time legends of New Japan. The move will also elevate the NEVER Openweight Championship currently held by Hiroshi Tanahashi and the US Title held by Jon Moxley, when he is able to travel back to Japan.
